Free and Easy File Sharing and Syncing

Like most folks I spend my days hopping from PC to PC to Laptop to PC and so on and so forth.  You’re in your office working on a document then your back from work and on your laptop wishing you could access that doc you were working on earlier.  Or you need to share that document with a coworker on the fly.  Sharing a document, argh!, you’ve got to FTP the document to your site or docs handler and setup permissions. “Forget about it!”

The Sharing/Sync deal is a huge dilemma for every MAC and PC user and a huge productivity crusher.  Wouldn’t it be nice if you could sync those documents or projects between all your PCs and create instant hyperlinks to share your docs and photos online.  Now you can!  Dropbox is the answer.  With the first 2GB free, Dropbox offers automatic syncing of files between all of your PCs.  Alter a file on your laptop and that file is automatically synced on all your linked MACS, PCs, and or laptops.  Dropbox resides on your toolbar.  Just drag and drop the files you want to sync and presto.  File Sharing is also a breeze.  Each public file in your dropbox is instantly accessible on the net via a secured hyperlink.  E-mail the link and your off.main_logo

We’ve piloted a lot of sync software and either the feature set just wasn’t there, the interface was imposible to work with, or the application would continually crash on us.  Dropbox is a dramatic departure from the garbage app. merry-go-round.  It’s actually easy to use.  Simple file sharing and even simpler syncing.    As I mentioned, the first 2 GBs are free and there are “zero” adds.  Give it a try!  Dropbox Delivers!  It’s a great online backup tool as well.  Happy Computing!  Talk to ya soon!

Spam Zombies

For the past few years we’ve all become far to familiar with the terms spam, spam filter, whitelists, blacklists and a whole host of other terms associated with spam.   Don’t forget the most worrying phrase in  that long list - spam zombie.

With the net closing in around them, spammers are looking for new and more creative ways to send their junk mail. Spam filters and challenge response PCs are becoming progressively more intelligent and blocking more spam each day. What was a spammer to do? The spammers took the next step - infiltrating your computer and using it as a spam machine.

When most of you think of the word zombie you’re reminded of old movies with groaning zombies chasing the terrified girl through a swamp or whatever low cost setting the movie revolved around. Spam zombies are, however, far more real and far more dangerous.  Reports have shown that 50-60% of all spam is generated from these zombie computers.

A spam zombie is when your PC is taken over by a type of virus called a Trojan. Once this Trojan is on your computer it sets up an e-mail application which allows it to begin sending mail directly from your PC to tens of thousands of victims. This all happens invisibly in the background and can be difficult to detect for even the experienced computer user.

How do Trojans get onto your computer? As in most cases they come from adult or similar sites. One of the first spam zombie trojans to appear became available via a link on sites promising viewers free access to a porno webcam. One click later and the Trojan is installed on your computer ready to  spam.

How can you check if your computer has become a zombie? Make sure that both your anti-virus and firewall software have current detection signatures and have been completely patched and updated. Working online without taking these necessary precautions is simply asking for trouble.   The very least you owe yourself is to run a full virus and spyware scan on your computer today. You might be unpleasantly surprised at what you’ll find lurking there.  Give us a call if your losing the battle against the spam zombies.

Facts About Spyware

Sadly, most are unaware of what spyware can do, the types of damage it can potentially cause & measures that can be taken to protect yourself from these annoying programs.  Most people who have spyware on their computers & laptops do not even realize it. The spyware lurks in the background doing it deeds within the shadows of their computer’s hard drives.

What Exactly Is Spyware?

Spyware are computer programs that exist on your computer’s hard drive. They come in a variety of types & flavors. Some spyware basically lurk in the shadows of your hard drive, watching your browser & taking notes of which web sites you visit.  Often, it then communicates what it finds to other parties by using your internet access. Other spyware watch & take note of your keystrokes whenever you visit a financial services web-site.  Known as “keyloggers,” this type of spyware then sends your sensitive financial information (including your username & passwords) to other parties across the net.

How Does Spyware Get Installed?

Known as “drive by’s,” these downloads happen automatically without the user’s permission five time a user has basically visited a particular web-site.  Most often, spyware is downloaded through the net. often times, the download occurs when a user knowingly downloads another piece of application & the spyware is attached & enjoys a “free ride” on the user’s hard drive. Other times, spyware can be downloaded by visiting web-sites.  While not all spyware is necessarily dangerous, it does represent a risk because of the damage it’s capable of doing.

Is Spyware Dangerous?

These other parties can then potentially access your bank, investment & loan accounts online without your knowledge or permission, wreaking havoc. Other types of spyware can actually gain control of your computer & distribute that control to other parties.

For example, the spyware that watches your keystrokes when you visit financial web sites & then communicates this data to other unknown parties exposes you & your financial livelihood to risk.

How Can Your Protect Your computer From Spyware?

As a result, unknown parties can potentially gain access to any sensitive data on your hard drive.  Such programs include the well-regarded Spybot - Search & Destroy program. These types of programs are increasingly helpful as spyware creators become more savvy.  Fortunately, dedicated programs like Spybot are constantly updated with the latest version of spyware that are being circulated. This allows it to keep up with new spyware, helping it to easily identify & remove them.
